The crayon/ pastel illustrations in gentle, saturated colors on delicious creamy paper are reminiscent of Marie Hall Ets in In the Forest.
Creatures of all sizes are accommodated, with tiny teacups for honeybees to drink their sweet violet tea and hotel rooms suitable for all travelers, from lizards to bears. Adult humans are completely absent, which leaves room for the fox waiter, the raccoon baker, the pig flautist, and all the other animals of this peaceable kingdom. Amenities appear just when they need them: the forest café and the bakery, the bridge over the stream, the tree (perfect for napping under), and, finally, the forest hotel, where an animal symphony concert takes place. Chirri and her sister Chirra go on a day-long bike ride through a gently rolling pastoral world. Highly recommended, to anyone looking for lovely, magical picture-books, and to those who have enjoyed other stories about this pair.★ "‘What a perfect day,' says Chirri as this story begins, and she’s right.
Of course, Chirri and Chirra also interact with the birds that have been calling to them throughout the story, so this is not a tale that has no natural interaction. As always, I found myself wishing I lived in these sisters' magical world! This one is a little different, in that it features so many other people, rather than animals. Much like its predecessors, I greatly enjoyed Chirri & Chirra: On the Town, appreciating both the gentle, magical story, and the beautiful, charming artwork. This time their journey takes them into town, rather than into some kind of wilderness, and they interact with the proprietor of a thread and yarn shop with a weaver, who turns their yarn into beautiful scarves and with the owner of a beautiful house. Those delightful bicycling twins, Chirri and Chirra, whose story has been chronicled in four previous picture-books, return in this newest title, once again setting out on a magical adventure.
